I flew out of Lexington on Friday, November 9th at the butt crack of dawn. My goal was to surprise Rachel at school on her last day before taking maternity leave. Danl was a trooper and drove me to the airport with all his best wishes for Rae and Jed. Noah and Chloe' would have given anything to go along, but school waits for no one so they had to stay behind. With Danl playing Mr. Mom, Leslie next door posed to jump in, and Deede on standby, I was feeling like leaving for 2 weeks was doable. I had a good substitute teacher in place and lesson plans were ready to go. Everyone was so supportive and encouraging.
Preparing to leave was next to nothing compared to my next task--and in the immortal words of Mammie from GWTW, "I don't know nothing about birthing no babies."...
On Tuesday, November 12th, (5 days later...) Rachel and I went to Walmart to get a RX filled and do a little light shopping. We thought the walking around would be good for Rachel, you know help speed things along. While we were there we had the best time playing Rockband and Guitar Hero.
Anyway, Rae felt like she felt her water may have broken, so we went home. (Her water breaking was nothing like you see on TV.) We called Labor and Deliver (LDR) and let them know. After we talked to them we came to the conclusion that the water did break and we were off to the hospital. Little did we know she was in active labor??? Her contractions were 3 minutes apart, and she was dilated to two+. Within an hour she started to feel light contractions and decided to go ahead and take something for the pain. At that point we all decided to get some sleep, it was around midnight. After about two hours had passed the nurse came back in and she was dilated to 6. From there the anaesthesiologist came in and administered the epidural. A few hours later, with me on one side and Jed on the other, after 20 minutes of pushing...
